Chicago Tribune Endorses Obama

For the first time in its 161-year history, The Chicago Tribune has endorsed a Democrat for President. This afternoon's edition of the prestigious newspaper, long a bastion of conservative political ideology, headlined its support for Barack Obama for President.

The Tribune said that Senator Obama is "deeply grounded in the best traditions of this country". The editorial continued: "[Obama] has had the character and the will to achieve great things despite the obstacles he faced". The unprecedented endorsement also noted that Republican John McCain had selected a running mate who is "not prepared to step in at a moment's notice and serve as President".  Furthermore, the paper said the Republican Party has "lost its way".

In a ringing closing paragraph, the Tribune editors conclude that Obama "has risen with his honor, grace and civility intact. He has the intelligence to understand the grave economic and national security risks that face us, to listen to good advice and make good decisions."

Dear General Powell: Please?

Colin Powell will appear on Meet the Press on Sunday. This is sure to fire up enormous speculation about whether or not he will endorse Barack Obama.

Will Powell drive the nail into McCain's campaign coffin?

Republican Senator Endorses Obama's Approach To Diplomacy

Ranking Republican and long-time US Senator, Richard Lugar, has endorsed Barack Obama's 'diplomacy' according to Congressional Quarterly
“He correctly cautions against the implication that hostile nations must be dealt with almost exclusively through isolation or military force. In some cases, refusing to talk can even be dangerous.”
"If most U.S. foreign policy attention is devoted to crises fomented by hostile regimes, we are ceding the initiative to our enemies and reducing our capacity to lead the world in ways that are more likely to affect our future.”
Lugar and Obama have worked together extensively in the area of nuclear nonproliferation. In 2007, the President signed the Lugar-Obama Proliferation and Threat Reduction Initiative into law.

Battleground Newspapers Endorse Obama

Three newspapers located within key battlegrounds have endorsed Barack Obama this morning. Here's Forward with Obama from the Toledo Blade.
For guidance in arriving at this momentous decision, the election of the next president of the United States, we can look to the sober lessons of history. Without exaggeration, the country faces a transformational election on Nov. 4, not unlike that of 1932, which prefaced Franklin Delano Roosevelt's New Deal and a long slog out of the Great Depression.

Like the choice 76 years ago, next month's election is one in which voters have the power to cast aside the failed, greed-driven principles of governance and economics that have led to the current downturn and return to an equilibrium in which hard work is again rewarded by a decent standard of living for the average American.

To be sure, the path to recovery won't be easy for the next president. There are ominous signs that the economy will continue to falter before confidence can be restored in the financial system. The leadership required to contain and reorder the economic mess created by eight years of heedless deregulation will have to be both inspired and inspiring.

We believe the person best equipped by temperament and intellect to firmly grasp the reins of government and guide it safely forward in these uncertain times is Barack Obama.

Like another member of Congress from Illinois, Abraham Lincoln, Senator Obama initially rose to prominence on the strength of soaring oratory. Over the past 18 months of the grueling campaign, his background has been thoroughly inspected and dissected by the press and a political opposition dedicated to keeping him from the White House.
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette says we need a President who will break from the past.

St. Louis Post-Dispatch: Barack Obama of Illinois should be the next President of the United States."

Hagan Receives Key Endorsement

This press release just in from the Hagan campaign.

GREENSBORO, N.C. - State Senator and U.S. Senate Candidate Kay Hagan (D-Guilford) received the endorsement of the North Carolina Troopers’ Association (NCTA) last week. After a thorough and objective evaluation of the candidates running for U.S. Senate, the group, which works to support the criminal justice system and advance the principles of proper law enforcement, endorsed Kay. The Troopers’ Association cited Kay’s strong record of working on behalf of public safety and working families. During her time in the state Senate, Kay worked to make North Carolina safer by supporting and introducing measures that would crack down on sexual predators, increase safety standards at schools, and allocate adequate funds to control gang activity.

“I am thrilled to receive the endorsement of North Carolina Troopers’ Association,” said Kay. “This is a group of individuals who represent the best of North Carolina, and I am honored to have their vote of confidence going forward in this election. Our state’s troopers work tirelessly to protect North Carolina families and ensure that North Carolina is the safest it can be. Their bravery and dedication are a model for us all. I look forward to doing everything I can to advocate on their behalf once I am in Washington.”

In a letter to Kay, Ron Crawford, President of the NCTA, wrote that Kay is “clearly the most qualified candidate for the U.S. Senate. Your record of supporting Troopers and police officers, of supporting improvements to public safety and for more effective law and order is extraordinary. Our troopers need a strong voice in Washington to lead efforts for legislation to promote Trooper and officer safety. The evidence demonstrates that you are the most qualified candidate to serve in the U.S. Senate.”

Last month, as a part of her “Best Interests, Not the Special Interests” tour, Kay released a comprehensive plan for “Safer Streets and Schools” that presented her commonsense solutions for curbing crime and gang activity. Also in July, Kay received the endorsement of more than half of North Carolina’s Sheriffs.
